Spam Spam Spam Spam

A savage band of spammers evidently found the new site late last week. Friday I woke up to well over 1,000 messages waiting for approval. Fully half of them read “Thanks for the awesome posting, it saved MUCH time!”, and were accompanied by links to various porn sites (which I’ll investigate later in order to verify that they are, in fact, the sort of filth that would never be allowed on a blog of this quality). If anyone has any ideas about how I can put a stop to the deluge, please get in touch.

  1. damn bastard spammers!

can you implement some sort of CAPTCHA thing when people hit “Post comment” that has to be filled in? that might help reduce it…

  2. Beaten to the idea, captcha is the best way to prevent the spam bots Joe.

    Good luck

  3. ‘which I’ll investigate later in order to verify that they are, in fact, the sort of filth that would never be allowed on a blog of this quality’..

    Priceless!!!!

  4. I have reCaptcha on mine, which cut the spam down to virtually zero initially. Unfortunately something has happened in the past month or two and now 1-3 get through a day, but it is still considerably better than a thousand I guess 🙂

  5. spammers usually use malware to harvest email addresses from websites, so take your email off your blog and off the html code of the website, and implement a widget from your webhost so people can just send you a message by clicking on the contact widget and filling a form. they will not see your email but you will see theirs.

  6. There are a few services online which you can plug into that prevent spam comments. One of the ones I know are http://mollom.com/. Also you might consider switching your comments solution to one that already offers this kind of protection like intensedebate or disqus.

HTH, and loving the site BTW!!!!
